What’s not to admire about Jay Gatsby? As a young man he is handsome, wealthy, and knows how to throw one hell of a party. A man of strong ambition and aspiration, he set his own destiny, and became the person he dreamed to be. Jay Gatsby reveals all the grandeur and decadence of the American Dream in the 1920s and how to dress the part.
“Dress like a millionaire and people will treat you as one.”
From his fine tailored clothes and his shirts in every imaginable color, Gatsby dressed the way he wished to be perceived and treated. As he demonstrated, dress like a millionaire and people will treat you as one. He understood that what you wear, and your perception to others can be just as important as what you do or say.
So is Jay Gatsby the next menswear inspiration? It seems so. But I warn to proceed with caution. For while Gatsby was adored as a man with a spectacular wardrobe, it was all built on a lie. His style was only skin deep. At its core, The Great Gatsby is about chasing a dream, and the fragility of those illusions. Gatsby was convinced that if he possessed Daisy, his life would be complete. Sadly she did not live up to the hype.
For this reason, I say tread lightly. Jay Gatsby is an inspiration- work hard and success will follow. Even dress for the person you want to be, but also be mindful of what you desire. If you think that new Italian blazer will lead to happiness, think again.
